A Multi Doser for Various Metallurgical Polishers

Image
The Spectrographic service team have developed a way of using a Multi-Doser on a number of different polishers, and this how they did it.   Diagnosis ·          We wanted to make the multi-doser an independent; this will allow the machine to be used with various polishers.   ·          It needed a nozzle arm for the fluid (slurry) to dispense from.   ·          It also needed its own power supply as this machine was originally designed to attach with a (Struers Rotopol polisher / grinder).     Actions ·          A dosing arm was designed and manufactured with magnetic base. This allows the nozzle feed / doser arm to a machine by adding a small metal plate. Or it can fit to the Multidoser and hover over your machine dispensing the correct amount of slurry when needed.   ·          Supply and fitting of the correct power supply an

Book Review: Surface Preparation and Microscopy of Materials by Brian Bousfield

Image
Spectrographic's Managing Director, Paul Chippendale, enjoys a good read.  His favourite Metallurgy publication is the book by Brain Bousfield, Surface Preparation and Microscopy of Materials. This metallurgical book really is the bible for all metallurgists, and gives a great insight into the field of materials surface preparation, according to Paul. It gives an in-depth insight into the preparation of metals, spray coatings, composites, minerals, PCB's and electronic circuits, thin film measurement, soft materials and ceramics.  The book also enlightens the reader into hardness testing and applied microscopy. Paul has been inspired by this book to write his own guidance notes for sample preparation, available from the website. The Spectrographic Team are here to help identify your preparation needs, and the book is available on Amazon. Email:  sales@spectrographic.co.uk Tel: 01274 966173 Website:  www.spectrographic.co.uk

Hardness Tester Test Block Calibration

At Spectrographic as a metallurgical suppliers we offer re-calibration of Hardness Tester test blocks.  There are different types of hardness test reference blocks which relate to the testing for hardness.  These are Rockwell, Vickers, Micro Vickers, Knoop, Brinell and Leeb Test Blocks. The BS EN ISO 6507-3:2005 relates to metallic materials, Vickers hardness test and calibration of reference test blocks.  The extracted information of this standard Calibration of reference blocks appears in section 9 - Validity, it states: " The reference block is only valid for the scale for which it was calibrated. The calibration validity should be limited to a duration of 5 years.  Attention is drawn to the fact that, for Al- and Cu-alloys, the calibration validity could be reduced to 2-3 years". The question here is are all the test blocks valid that are currently been used for hardness testing within your metallurgy department.  This should become apparent if there is a qual

Servicing a MetCut 300 Cutting Machine

Image
The MetCut 300 Metallurgical abrasive cutting machine for sectioning of samples such as heat treatment samples. The MetCut 300 metallurgical abrasive cutter uses a 250mm abrasive wheel and can cut samples up to 75mm diameter. The machine can be equipped with a recirculation tank and twin vices to offer a high quality abrasive cutting machine. Going out servicing these machines we see them in all kind of conditions most of them are often clean and reasonable, but you do come across a minority in poor conditions. We often find the clamps seized up and the odd coolant hose snapped from a build-up of dirt in the chamber. This causes the filter in the coolant tank to block and need replacing. At Spectrographic we have all of these items in stock so when we go out on a service parts can be replaced and installed immediately. After the service or repair a full report is sent out detailing what the Spectrographic service engineers have done with any recomme

Refurbishment of a Struers DP10 Metallurgical Polisher

Image
The DP polisher could be considered a classic, it would only be Spectrographic who would restore such a polishing machine used for the polishing of geological samples or metallurgical samples. The Struers DP10 offers polishing of samples with direct load polishing cloths  fitted to a 200mm platen. They don’t make them like this anymore. Seized and clogged with dirt, this machine had defiantly seen better days! After stripping the machine down and a lot of cleaning, freeing off all bearings and the head weights, the polisher was looking and operating a lot better. Upon the completion of the refurbishment, the DP10 was looking good as new and ready for a new home with a clean bill of health. After all services and repairs are complete, we always aim to leave machines looking and operating as good as the day they first came out of the box. When your livelihood can hinge on the reliability of your equipment, Spectrographic specializes in keeping that equipment at it'
